One major concern of the conference was thus to connect scholars from different academic backgrounds with each other and with other, nonacademic stakeholders. As bioethics, and Islamic bioethics even more so, is a comparatively young discipline, bioethicists are very often scattered across various different disciplinary boundaries, and their scholarly work often emerges in isolation. The conference was jointly organised by the Department for Islamic Studies and the Department for South East Asian Studies and generously funded by the German Federal Ministry of Health (Bundensministerium für Gesundheit) and the Körber Foundation (Körber-Fond Nachwuchsforschung). Preface This collection of manuscripts emerged from the international conference “Health Related Issues and Islamic Normativity”1 which was held at the University of Hamburg between 20th and 23rd June 2012.
